Cromarty's 'grand old lady', Jean Newell, died at her home in Duke Street on 26 October. She celebrated her 103rd birthday on the 9th of September.
Her funeral on Monday, 31st October was held in her beloved East Church. The Rev Willlis Jones described her as "a legend in her own time who now belongs to the ages." Her former pupils may have a special appreciation for his comment that many loved her, multitudes feared her and everybody respected her.
The service included a solo by Evelyn Wilson of one of her favourite hymns, a poem read by her grandson and a tribute by David Alston.
